The layers of the right hand panel here are taken from a collection of personal effects found in a house in Brittany, including an annotated 1920s edition of La Fontaine’s Fables from which the title of the work is taken:
‘The sea promises mountains and marvels
Go ahead, the winds and the thieves will come’
